Sharing stories plays a powerful role in helping children understand who they are, where they come from, and how they belong within their family and community. At MindChamps, we thoughtfully plan learning opportunities that nurture these ideas in meaningful, age-appropriate ways.
The much-loved Australian story of Possum Magic by Mem Fox is a way to inspire conversation and reflection around identity with children. This story is part of our MindChamps Reading Curriculum, where books are used not only to support literacy, but instil a lifelong love of reading.
What Can We Learn from Possum Magic?
Through Possum Magic, children are gently introduced to powerful themes around belonging like:
- Self-acceptance
As Hush journeys across Australia searching for a way to regain visibility, children learn that being true to oneself is something to be celebrated. - Cultural Identity
The story highlights Australia’s landscapes, foods and traditions, encouraging children to develop pride and curiosity in Australian culture. - Connection to Family and Community
Hush’s journey is guided by the love and care of Grandma Poss, reinforcing the importance of family bonds, belonging and shared experiences. - Exploration and Personal Growth
Hush’s adventure in self-discovery takes her out of her comfort zone, touching on ideas of perseverance and learning from elders, teaching children about the importance of resilience and strengthening connections in the journey of discovering one’s true self.
How We Translate these Messages into Meaningful Learning Experiences
Our educators build on these themes through conversations, experiences and connections, helping children deepen their understanding and apply these ideas in meaningful ways.
Cooking and sharing food is just one powerful way to explore these ideas as it provides an opportunity for children to connect, learn and build a sense of community together. Inspired by the many delicious Australian foods enjoyed by Grandma Poss and Hush in Possum Magic, we’ve whipped up a Wholesome Lamington recipe with a Native Twist as a way to connect to identity and culture through food. This recipe incorporates native wattle seeds, an ingredient traditionally used by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and harvested from Australia’s own golden wattle.
By discovering where foods come from and enjoying them together, like Hush in the story, children can build a deeper connection to culture while strengthening their sense of belonging. These shared experiences also support children’s food literacy—encouraging curiosity, appreciation and confidence with a wide variety of nutritious foods for life, something we are deeply passionate about at MindChamps.
