Toddler (2-3 years)

Big emotions, bigger discoveries

Toddlers are natural explorers – curious, energetic and eager to make sense of the world around them. Our Toddler Room is designed for active, hands-on learning, guided by educators who turn everyday experiences into opportunities for growth.

A time of rapid change

The toddler years are extraordinary. In the space of just 12-18 months, your child will go from taking their first wobbly steps to running, climbing and jumping. From saying a handful of words to speaking in sentences. From parallel play to forming their first real friendships.

This is also the age of “I do it myself” – when children start to assert their independence, test boundaries and experience big emotions they don’t yet have the words to express.

It can be challenging. But it’s also magical. Because underneath all that energy and emotion is a child who is learning at an incredible rate – about themselves, about others and about how the world works.

With growing independence and big emotions, toddlers learn best through movement, play and connection. Our Toddler Room provides the freedom to explore, the guidance to navigate big feelings and the encouragement to keep trying.

THE 6 AREAS WE NURTURE

Six building blocks of toddler development

Everything we do in the Toddler Room is guided by our S.M.I.L.E.S. methodology – ensuring your child’s development is nurtured across six essential areas. Here’s what each looks like for toddlers.

Sensory

What it means

Toddlers are sensory learners. They need to touch, taste, smell, see and hear to make sense of the world.

How we develop it

We offer messy play, water play, sand, playdough, painting and other rich sensory experiences. These activities build the brain connections that support learning across all areas.

Motor

What it means

Toddlers need to move. Both gross motor skills (running, climbing, jumping) and fine motor skills (threading, drawing, building) are developing rapidly.

How we develop it

We provide space and equipment for climbing, running and dancing, alongside activities that develop fine motor control. Physical confidence supports confidence in all areas.

Intellectual

What it means

Toddlers are natural scientists – constantly experimenting, testing and figuring out how the world works.

How we develop it

We offer sorting, matching, building and problem-solving activities. We follow children’s curiosity and extend their thinking through open-ended questions and exploration.

Linguistic

What it means

Toddlers are language sponges. Their vocabulary is expanding rapidly and they’re learning to communicate their needs, thoughts and feelings.

How we develop it

We create a language-rich environment with conversations, stories, songs and questions. Our educators narrate activities, expand on children’s words and introduce new vocabulary in meaningful contexts.

Emotional

What it means

Toddlers feel deeply, but they’re still learning how to manage those feelings. Emotional development at this age is about building self-awareness and learning to regulate.

How we develop it

Our educators respond to big emotions with warmth and patience – helping children name what they’re feeling, co-regulate when things get overwhelming and gradually develop emotional skills.

Social

What it means

Toddlers are moving from parallel play to genuine social interaction. They’re learning to share, take turns and navigate relationships with peers.

How we develop it

We create opportunities for cooperative play, gentle group activities and supported social interactions. Our educators guide children through the tricky moments of learning to play with others.
